What Is Central AC Airflow Configuration?

Airflow configuration describes how air enters and exits the indoor air handler cabinet and how it connects to your home’s ductwork.

It has nothing to do with fan speed or airflow volume.
It is purely about physical orientation and duct alignment.

Choosing the wrong airflow configuration is one of the most common and costly replacement mistakes.

The Three Main Airflow Configurations

Most residential central AC and heat pump systems use one of these configurations:

Upflow Air Handler

How it works:

  • Air enters the bottom of the cabinet
  • Air exits through the top into the supply ducts

Most common location:

  • Basements
  • Utility closets
  • Garages (with vertical duct runs)

Why it’s popular:

  • Simple, efficient duct routing
  • Gravity helps condensate drainage
  • Very common in replacement installs

If your ducts go upward from the unit, you likely have an upflow system.

Downflow Air Handler

How it works:

  • Air enters through the top
  • Air exits the bottom into floor ducts

Most common location:

  • Slab-on-grade homes
  • Closets where ducts run below the floor
  • Some older homes in warmer regions

Important considerations:

  • Condensate management is more complex
  • Not all systems support downflow
  • Must be explicitly designed for this orientation

If your ducts go down into the floor, you likely have a downflow system.

Horizontal Air Handler (Left or Right)

How it works:

  • Air moves sideways through the cabinet
  • Orientation may be horizontal left or horizontal right

Most common location:

  • Attics
  • Crawlspaces
  • Tight mechanical rooms

Why orientation matters:

  • Left vs right is determined by duct connection direction
  • Condensate drainage must be correctly configured
  • Installation space is often limited

If the unit lies on its side, you have a horizontal system.

Why Airflow Configuration Is Critical in Replacements

When replacing a central AC system:

  • Your ductwork is already built
  • Your mechanical space is fixed
  • Your installer expects alignment

If airflow configuration does not match:

How to Identify Your Existing Airflow Configuration

  1. Looking at duct direction
    • Ducts above → Upflow
    • Ducts below → Downflow
    • Ducts to the side → Horizontal
  2. Checking the air handler label
    • Often lists UP / DOWN / HORIZONTAL
  3. Noting the unit orientation
    • Standing upright → Upflow or Downflow
    • Lying on its side → Horizontal
